Hey everyone, welcome to
0:03
The Secret Room, I'm Ben Ham. We've
0:06
shared so many secrets together this year,
0:08
some sad, some funny, some uplifting, and
0:10
others that just make you better understand
0:12
the strength and fragility of the human
0:14
spirit. Thanks to all of
0:16
our secret tellers this year for the strength they showed sharing
0:18
their stories. It's not always easy. And
0:21
next year is going to be even more amazing. In
0:24
our very next episode, To Die Young, a
0:26
man will explain why he's not telling his
0:28
family that he has a terminal condition. It's
0:31
a heartbreaking exploration of an inner struggle no one
0:33
should have to endure. And
0:35
coming early next year to the podcast, how
0:37
a man's digital heist in a virtual world
0:40
led to real world gains. We'll
0:42
also hear a woman who, as a child,
0:44
was a revered psychic in her community. But
0:47
what all the believers around her didn't know was
0:49
that her predictions were 100% the product
0:52
of a little girl's imagination. And
0:54
I can hardly wait to share a complicated secret from
0:56
a nurse who worked at a psychiatric facility. She
0:59
crossed ethical boundaries when she fell in love with
1:01
a patient. But making it even
1:03
more complicated, she's of mixed race. And
1:06
he was a ranking official in a white supremacist
1:08
group facing 20 years in
1:10
prison. And that's just for starters,
1:13
2024 is going to be our best
1:15
year yet. And if you're looking
1:17
to relive one of our listener favorites over
1:19
the holidays, go back to episode 158, Sugar
1:21
Rush, because we'll have a long-awaited update coming
1:23
soon. Then at Errolan turned to a Sugar
1:25
Baby website to make ends meet while taking
1:27
care of her special needs kid. But she
1:29
had no idea where a relationship would take
1:31
her when she was paired with a very
1:33
abrupt man, nor was she prepared for the
1:35
devastating way that it would end. Look
1:38
for episode 158, Sugar Rush, in our feed. And stay
1:40
with us for an update coming soon. And
1:43
now, a collection of street secrets to round out the year.
1:46
First up, Kristy's secret reveal. She
1:48
was inspired to send this one in after
1:51
our last episode, Karma, where Samantha tried, in
1:53
vain, to fix a mailbox she had backed
1:55
into. on
2:00
the very same day I got
2:02
my driver's license to be legal.
2:04
I don't know what they were
2:06
thinking but they let me have
2:08
the vehicle for that night and
2:10
as I was driving it I
2:13
somehow ended up on the curb
2:17
and there was this baby tree there and
2:20
I hit said baby tree. Baby
2:23
tree was unearthed because
2:25
like when I went to get off the curb I
2:27
kind of like drug it with me. I
2:30
pulled into the parking lot next to
2:32
where I hit the tree. I felt
2:34
horribly bad because I killed the
2:36
tree and I got out
2:39
of the car I went over to see
2:41
and I realized that thanks to the brace
2:43
that the city put on the bottom of
2:45
the tree and the protective barrier they had
2:47
around it because of
2:49
bad weather blah blah blah to give the
2:51
tree a chance at
2:53
life the tree didn't
2:55
snap in half and I couldn't believe it so I started
3:00
like putting it back into
3:02
the ground but I was kind of like digging around
3:04
with my hands and
3:06
then a cop pulls
3:09
up puts his lights on looks
3:11
at me and says what are you doing and
3:14
I had to think really quick and I
3:16
lied to him because I didn't want
3:18
a ticket I didn't want reckless driving
3:21
I didn't want my parents to
3:23
ground me from my car for life and never
3:25
be able to drive again and I was a
3:27
brand new driver literally
3:30
got legal that
3:32
day and I hit something like
3:35
a tree so I said
3:37
well I came across this tree that was
3:39
just kind of pulled out of the
3:41
ground I don't know what happened but
3:45
I didn't want us to lose the tree so
3:47
I'm trying to put it back in and
3:49
he's like oh well that's so nice of you
3:51
let me see what I have in my car
3:53
so that we can dig
3:55
the hole deeper together and we'll get
3:58
this girl standing back up so. this
4:00
cop unknowingly helped me
4:02
cover up my crime. And
4:07
I never told him any different. I lied
4:09
to him. He believed me. We put the
4:11
tree back in the ground. We patted it
4:13
all down. She looked like it was normal
4:15
again. And to this day, that tree is
4:18
still standing and the cop just
4:20
retired from the police force not
4:22
too long ago who helped me
4:25
unknowingly cover up my crime. So
4:27
yes, that is my little
4:29
tree secret. I
4:34
make up and sing secret songs
4:36
to my dog that no one else
4:38
is ever allowed to hear. And I
4:40
would be absolutely humiliated if anybody ever
4:42
heard me singing these ridiculous
4:45
songs to my dog. Okay,
4:53
here's a funny little story
4:55
for you. This morning I
4:57
was rushing out of the house and
5:00
when I opened the door of my house to leave
5:02
I realized it was colder than I expected. So
5:04
I needed a jacket or something. I needed a coat. So
5:08
I turned around to go back to
5:10
my bedroom which has a lock on it. I
5:12
locked my bedroom door before I leave every day
5:15
because I know my mother will and can't often
5:17
go in there to steal a
5:19
stuff or just rummage to
5:21
my stuff or whatever. So
5:25
I went back to my bedroom to get my coat which is where
5:27
I keep my coat and
5:30
my bedroom door is locked. So
5:32
I go to unlock it. I
5:34
take my car key and I try pushing the
5:36
unlock button and I try unlocking my bedroom door.
5:40
And I do it twice. Twice.
5:44
I pick up my car key, push
5:46
the unlock car
5:48
button and expect
5:51
it to open my bedroom door. I
5:56
need a, I need some kind of
5:58
vacation. I need coffee. break?
6:00
I don't know. I don't
6:02
know. But I started laughing by
6:04
myself. So yeah, that's my funny
6:06
story today. My
6:11
secret is I was Christmas
6:14
shopping with my mom and
6:16
we went into a store that
6:18
we both love and she was
6:20
like, oh do you like this? Do you like that?
6:23
And we were picking out things and she had something
6:25
in her hands that I had liked. It was like
6:27
a shirt. And then we continued shopping and she was
6:29
like holding it the whole time. And then
6:31
we just walked out of the store. The
6:35
alarms didn't go off and she
6:37
just kept walking and halfway down the mall she said, oh
6:39
my god, I still have a shirt in my hand. And
6:41
I said, just keep going, just keep going. We can't
6:43
turn back now. And we ran
6:45
through the mall, stuffed in one
6:47
of our bags and just like got away
6:49
with it. When
6:55
I was in grade 11, me and
6:57
my best friend were in the same
6:59
art class. And one day we went
7:01
on an art field trip to the
7:03
art galleries Ontario. So we
7:06
started on the top level. And one
7:08
of the first things we see is
7:10
these kind of half walls separating this
7:12
one section. And on
7:15
a platform, there are these three
7:17
cylindric pyramids
7:19
that look like they're made out of
7:21
metal. So me and my friend, we just
7:24
look at each other and we go,
7:26
I want to touch this so bad. So
7:28
we both decided, okay, we're going to do
7:30
it. We're going to touch it. We looked
7:33
at each other, we counted to three, and
7:35
we reached out to touch the sculpture. But
7:38
when our hands came away, our hands
7:40
were filled with black
7:43
goop. It was not made
7:45
out of metal. It was made
7:48
out of some sort of goop. We freaked
7:50
out. We ran over and rubbed it off
7:52
under the bench and
7:54
then went and hid in the bathroom. We're
7:57
panicking. We're freaking out. We did
7:59
fine. brave enough to
8:01
leave the bathroom. And
8:04
we casually walk past the art installation
8:06
and you can just
8:08
see two distinct
8:10
gouge marks in the
8:13
side where we had
8:15
touched the art. For the
8:17
rest of the day we were in a
8:19
panic, probably until like the next day honestly,
8:21
I thought that they were going to come
8:23
and reprimand us, but nothing
8:26
happened and my best
8:28
hope is that there was some sort of butter knife
8:30
that they had to account
8:32
for these sorts of things. We'll
8:35
be back in just two short weeks with episode 210, To
8:38
Die Young. Thanks to
8:40
everyone for supporting your favorite indie podcast that
8:42
could, The Secret Room. And Happy New Year,
8:45
I'm Ben Ham. you
