RATING
This podcast owes me at least a year's worth of Kleenex. This is an incredible limited-run drama, with some stellar sound design that drives home a sense of place and location. In 8 episodes, you will somehow become extremely attached to these characters, through not just clever and emotionally devastating writing, but a set of performances that will make you laugh and make you cry. I still can't believe how much I laughed in a podcast with the word "disaster" in the title. A must-listen for anyone who lives deep space science-fiction.
I am really getting into audio dramas lately, and this one is fantastic. On par with watching a big-budget movie. It’s got sci-fi action, excellent scripting and acting, and even a touch of humor. The characters feel very real. It sucks you right in.
Voice acting was great, but sometimes there were too many noises that made it hard to listen to. Also, I feel as though it was unfinished, like we didn't actually get to the real story.
A little faster paced than I would have liked, but it was well-written and well-acted. I didn't expect the ending and binged all at once.
there's something magnificent about stories with scientists in a remote location going through some shit. i started listening to this podcast under the impression it was a comedy, imagine the shock wave i went through! and yet that's my favorite kind of surprise; when you go into something expecting lighthearted and humourish story and get a heartbreaking tear-jerking motherfucker. the humour is on point and so nuanced and balanced with the tragedy of it all i couldn't help but laugh through the tears. and the characters! good god, i felt like i knew them for years. from now on this is the only genre/trope i crave fori gave it 4 out of 5 stars only because the story felt very unfinished, like i've listened to the preview, or rather, a summary of it all
A wonderful short series show. Everything about this is super well done and while the ending was great I would love more. Do not skip on this one, if you are a fan of the Expanse this might just be right up your alley.
Absolutely fantastic in every aspect from storyline to sfx!
Fantastic drama. Sad and beautiful. Filled with quality characters. They make you yearn for more time with them. If you enjoy Marsfall you will enjoy this.
A very good sci fi story podcast.
This podcast was done very well, but that last episode was heartbreaking. I would love to hear more from this world, though, especially to learn what's up with the asteroid. Great show, and great job, voice actors
A very interesting sci-fi audio drama, definitely worth listening, especially if you’re a fan of shows like We Fix Space Junk, SAYER, Among The Stars And Bones and other such goodies. I haven’t read up on the worldbuilding yet, but I’m excited to check out more on the website when I find the time (which by the way looks really cool, clearly all that web development knowledge is paying off).[Spoilers for the rest of this review, you've been warned]I really liked the sound design for the asteroid-scanning device and I also greatly appreciated the detail of air audibly escaping to the vacuum of empty space. I actually expected the crew to discover a much more standard, flesh-alien (akin to the homonymous movie, Alien) and was pleasantly surprised to find it was the asteroid itself. I was also very impressed when I saw that both Grimm and Con were voiced by the same person, I really couldn’t tell when I was listening, so good job on that! More kudos for making all the deaths meaningful and impactful, especially Blue’s, I thought that was a strong point writing-wise and it was well-acted. I do have a few minor nitpicks with regards to some lines (namely Blue’s “Lucky lucky lucky!” one and her rant) in that they felt a bit out of place and briefly took me out of the story, but I’m not sure if it was an issue with the writing or the actor’s delivery.Overall this is a good show which I’d recommend and I would be really interested to see more stories set in this universe.
The end 'twist'/reveal was predictable and some elements of the sound design weren't my favourite, but it was still able to make me cry, the emotional beats are handled well.
I'm glad I listened to this. While other sci-fi audio dramas just don't know when they overstay their welcome (Wolf 359), this one was written with a specific ending in mind and told the story it wanted to tell. The voice acting is very decent and so is the production value in general.
An excellent hard sci fi tale that doesn't pull its punches. Well written, acted and produced with solid sound design. Well worth a listen
Fast paced and easy to binge. The voice actors did great, and though the sounds got on my nerves, I enjoyed the story The Hyacinth Disaster shared.I would definitely not suggest listening to this one with headphones. I normally listen at work so headphones are a must, but there are so many loud sounds in this story that it doesn't work well to listen that way.
Dramatic and succinct. All the actors give a great performance and the realities of surviving in space are made distressingly real. Still hoping for some sort of continuation.
Good space story, but it ended and it felt like there was more to tell.
I gave this podcast a try after finding it on Podchaser. I found that I really liked it! It took me a few minutes into the first episode to get a grip as to what was happening and getting use to the characters and their voices. It turned out to be a podcast that was well put together. I encourage listeners to give it a try.
Well worth a listen, if not more.Production, writing, and acting are all top-notch. As a limited series, it moves quickly, traversing a gamut of emotions each episode, avoiding the bloat that multi-season shows tend to accumulate. This show hits hard and fast, so make sure you've got extra tissues on hand.
The Hyacinth Disaster - No Spoilers! The year is AD 2151 and some dozen or so supercorporations competitively mine the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter with a ruthlessness outside the laws governing Earth. Under their manipulation are thousands of mining ships fighting to get their big break. It’s a normal day for the crew of one of these ships, the MRS Hyacinth, that is until a call comes in about a sister ship, MRS Corvus, being taken hostage by an opposing company while working in their territory. With the higher ups in corporation deciding to leave the MRS Corvus to the terrible fate its captors describe, the MRS Hyacinth decides to break some rules (all of them really) and mine an unsanctioned asteroid in order to pay the ransom and save not only their fellow coworkers but their friends. However, once they arrive things don’t go as planned leading to sci fi emotional audio drama that is The Hyacinth Disaster. I know you’re thinking: not another space podcast! While the niche may be oversaturated at the moment this pod’s ending sets itself apart enough to warrant being added to your listening collection. While a slow burn the show doesn’t drag on for dozens of episodes. In just seven, half hour parts it’ll pull you in, make you feel like one of the team and then rip your heart out. Each episode ends in a cliff hanger but don’t worry the 2017 show finished up that same year and is ready to binge. If the self-contained story leaves you wanting more you’ll be happy to hear that creator David Carlson intends to eventually produce more additions that explore more of the complex words we get a glimpse of in this series. The tear invoking podcast has 4.8 out of 5 stars on Apple Podcasts and 223 Ratings. There are some moments of lesser audio quality not due to poor recording or producing but to fit parts of the story where the crew uses staticy radios to communicate. Not a deal breaker for me but I could see it for some. The show has a really extensive website with a database full of non-spoiling background for the story. A true picture of a team with everyone having a niche and complicated relationships I think this Shakespeare-esque tragedy would make a great film.
