A masterpiece. Ever so rarely, an audio drama comes around that shows everyone how it should be done. This show has mastered every aspect of its storytelling, From maintaining a propulsive tension that never lets up, to furnishing an elegant solution to a locked room mystery, to making sharp and precise commentary on how society keeps order, there's not a single misstep or shred of excess fat on this ambitious, virtuosic piece.
This story rolls out really well over each episode. Each one gives you just a glimpse of what the larger story is. It goes from odd to very strange and then gets put together. The chronological back-and-forth was jarring at first, but when you get a sense of it, it works well for the story.
interesting story and place it piece-by-piece narration, i gave it 4 stars because of the tightness and structure this podcast has, even though the emotional bond to characters is lacking
A true crime story set in a dystopian sci-fi future. Everything about this show is amazing: The writing, the acting, the way it slowly dawns on you what this is really about. And the end is mindblowing: Chocking, eye opening but also with a glimpse of hope. A true masterpiece. Best listened to all episodes back to back!
I lacked some charisma in characters however in general podcast was interesting. Nice concept, mystery in a mystery, backstories could've been improved also but nevertheless solid fiction.
The 'real' world story is more interesting than the murder mystery
One of the first fiction podcasts I listened to and still one of my favorites.
so so good. loved it, the kind of podcast that lends itself perfectly to the audio only format. not the kind of podcast that i would relisten to, but that’s not a critique in this case.
Decent and concise.
Amazing and creative storytellling. Full of mysterious and has an ending that I feel will leave listeners satisfied.
This is a really intense science fiction audio drama that you won't be able to stop listening to, even from the trailer. The story is engrossing, and the production is absolutely flawless. Do yourself a favor: set aside an afternoon and dive right in.
A good mystery series. Each episode goes into the history of a different character and it all ties nicely together at the end. I found myself hooked and wanting more, with each episode not being too long or too short.
Deca Tapes is often hailed as one of the very best fictional podcasts and while I don't doubt it, unfortunately the show just wasn't for me.While the premise is highly intriguing, I didn't find the Big Brother diary room confessional style of single character narration to be interesting. I too often drifted off during the lengthy monologues and had to backtrack. What was being told was interesting but I'd rather experience it for myself. As the series progressed I found it more and more difficult to keep track of how the characters were interacting and the relevance of developments. The ending, explaining the nature of the group's gathering and their true location, is very clever though. If you like single narration series, Deca Tapes will most likely appeal to you. Otherwise, you may struggle to follow along with enough enthusiasm to embrace the good ideas it boasts.
A well-paced locked room mystery that maintains tension and revealing enough information to keep the listener invested without becoming frustrated. Each episode focuses on a different character. Includes commentary on the prison system and its injustices without sugarcoating the crimes these characters committed.
Very original and engrossing story, told really well. Loved the format, makes for a much better (and clear) listening experience than a bunch of people talking over each other (and harder to overact this way).
Very well made/produced; the music was great. I just had a hard time getting into it as the first few episodes were pretty confusing. By the time it started coming together I had lost interest and found myself drifting.
I really loved this podcast and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a short podcast (it's only eight episodes long!) that will undoubtedly serve you a few surprising and horrifying twists. I'm giving it four stars simply because it doesn't quite live up to my favorites, but nonetheless, it's a high quality, unique podcast.
A very well written bite sized story that is outstandingly voiced and paced! Amazing music, sound design and direction.
"Fear follows the crime and is it's punishment". VoltaireDECA tapes have only dropped 4 episodes out of the 8 so it's too soon to give it a rating. The podcast is a found tape/locked room/self-discovery story. The DECA tapes are tapes that were recorded by ten people trapped in the same space. Each person records their own tape so each episode we get a different person's point of view. Also, to put the tapes in context, we hear about what's been going on outside of the space through newscasts and a bit of the taper's background. Each of the voice actors is excellent. The timing where we switch from the taper to a newscast and back again is spot on. The music really works with the story. I am going to see if the music is available separately.I also think it was wise to limit the story to 8 episodes. I am not sure that the story would work as well if it was a long-running podcast.Lastly, I should caveat this review with the fact that I am the perfect audience for this type of podcast (I am a huge fan of the anime "Monster"). If a suspenseful psychological thriller is not your jam, I think it might be worth a listen just to admire the construction of the story.Disclaimer: Those who can do, those who can't teach and those who can't teach criticize. I am in the third category. Though I offer my opinion I expect the podchaser gods will make sure that other opinions will be heard as well.
