Frankie Knuckles (born January 18, 1955, New York) was an American DJ, record producer and remix artist. He played an important role in developing House Music as a Chicago DJ in the beginning in the 1980s. Frankie was the very first DJ to receive the Grammy Award for Remixer of the Year in 1998. In 2005, Knuckles was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame. It is industry legend that the term “House Music” surfaced in reference to the sounds played at the Warehouse by Knuckles. Initially it was a catch-all term to describe the wide range of music being played at the Warehouse. It soon became the word used to define the raw, drum machine based edits and tracks that Knuckles played in the early 1980s. Few figures in contemporary music have influenced their respective fields the way Frankie Knuckles has revolutionized dance music. As one of the most renowned DJs in the world, Frankie Knuckles packed dance floors with his unique style for over 30 years. For good reason he was affectionately known as The Godfather of House. Until his death in 2014, Knuckles continued to use his celebrity and much of his spare time providing entertainment for various AIDS charity events. He supported anything that had to do with children. He was noted as saying, “I cannot stand to hear a child cry of want, hunger, or a lack of love.” He worked tirelessly for many organizations, including Meals on Wheels, GMHC, Pediatric AIDS and The Harvey Milk School. What better way to spend your day than with the heartfelt grooves of one of music's most loved and respected figures. With a whole host of originals, remixes and Director's Cuts exclusives. Listen to the last-ever recorded set from the legend, Frankie Knuckles; right here on Black Tape Wine and Spirits' Mix-Tape of the Week.
