Dr. Jamal Joseph (formerly Eddie Joseph) is a writer, director, producer, poet, activist, and educator. He is a full professor and former chair of Columbia University's Graduate Film Division and the artistic director of the New Heritage Theatre Group in Harlem.Joseph was a member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, and was prosecuted as one of the Panther 21 at the age of 16. He spent six years at Leavenworth Penitentiary.Upon release from prison, Joseph worked for Touro College in East Harlem, where he arranged graduation ceremonies at the Apollo Theatre that included star graduation addresses and parades.Joseph has appeared on HBO's Def Poetry Jam, BET's American Gangster and on Tupac Shakur's The Rose That Grew from Concrete Volumes 1 and 2. He wrote the interactive biography on Tupac Shakur, "Tupac Shakur Legacy." His first book, the memoir "Panther Baby," was published in 2012.While imprisoned, Joseph received his B.A. from the University of Kansas.
