The exhibition Elmgreen & Dragset. Celebrity - The One & The Many, 7 November 2010 – 27 March, 2011, held at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art represents the first solo-exhibition in a German Museum of the Scandinavian artist duo Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset (*1961/*1969). It was through such spectacular projects as The Collectors, shown at the Venice Biennale in 2009 that Elmgreen & Dragset not only received huge public acclaim, but were also celebrated by art criticism worldwide. Among others, Celebrity directs attention to the relationship between "the one and the many” – the one being a prominent personality, and the masses being those 'normal' people – thus casting light on the way in which the lifestyle of the rich and famous is mediated by means of staged, artificial realities to a broad public. In the two atria of the ZKM | Museum for New Art, the duo realized two large-scale installations especially developed for the museum’s architecture: a four-storey apartment block and a ballroom of classical appearance. Such stark contrasts as poverty and wealth, drab everydayness and the glamorous comprise the common thread that runs through the installation of the exhibition, which sets out to examine the current socio-cultural climate. Here, the exhibition visitor himself becomes a performative element for other visitors who may observe him from the higher storeys with the aid of binoculars. Hence, the visitor becomes a part of the installation as a kind of extended concept of culture. The exhibition was curated by Andreas F. Beitin.
