Episode 1:
10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help that Actually Works -- A True Story
by Dan Harris
In this episode of the 3-Minute Book Review, we step inside the head and monkey mind of news anchorman Dan Harris where he finds peace through Zen meditation at a 10-day silent meditation retreat, seeks answers to life's questions through mentors including Eckhart Tolle and Joseph Goldstein, and offers readers the benefits of integrating mindfulness into everyday life despite the voice in our heads often acting frantic, running ramped and acting like a jerk.
As a sporadic Zen meditator myself, I too, have picked up other Zen books to learn the practice from other Zen authors (some Western) across the spectrum including another by Thich Nat Hahn called Peace is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life, Jan Chozen Bays' Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food, and Sylvia Bootrstein's Don't Just Do Something, Sit There.
I'd known about Dan Harris from briefly flipping back and forth between primetime news stations, but didn't give the news anchorman turned author another thought until listening to an insightful, personifying interview between him and Michael Ian Black on Black's How To Be Amazing podcast.
Beyond the 3-Minute Book Review for 10% Happier, some of the other most touching moments from Harris are shown through his professional relationship with Peter Jennings, his relationship and support from wife Bianca, his conversation with the Dalai Lama, and the emotional experience he reveals of him silently crying during one of the days on his meditation retreat.
Consensus: READ (BUT I RECOMMEND LISTENING TO AUDIO BOOK)
